The Surgical First Assistant, under the direction and supervision of the surgeon, provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure and other intraoperative technical functions. The Surgical First Assistant may also perform preoperative and postoperative duties to facilitate patient care.
Responsible for ensuring appropriate equipment is available
Reviewing permit to confirm procedure
Assist in moving and positioning patient
Providing assistance throughout the procedure in a variety of surgical techniques.

Minimum Education: Must have attended an accredited course of study for first assistant and must possess state certification. Surgical assisting education program; foreign-medical school; or surgical technology education program with additional training; or surgical technology education program followed by work experience and separate surgical assisting education program is required.
Minimum Experience: Three years of current operating room, scrub, and/or assisting experience within the last five years is required.
Required Certifications/Registrations/Licenses: Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) conferred by the National Board for Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting is required. Certified Surgical Technology recognized by the Association of Surgical Technologist (A.S.T.) or the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) is required. BLS required.
